The 2010 Eta Aquarid meteor shower will peak on the morning of May 6, 2010. Stargazers should however see nearly as many meteors on the mornings of May 5 and May 7. The full range of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower is from about April 21 to May 12. Stargazers who have cloudy nights during the peak might therefore be able to observe a few Eta Aquarid meteors a few nights after the peak.

At the peak, amateur astronomers under dark skies might see as many as 20 Eta Aquarid meteors per hour. Fewer meteors will be visible before and after the peak. Because the radiant for the Eta Aquarid meteor shower is in the southern sky, it will be higher in the sky in the southern hemisphere. Southern stargazers can therefore observe more meteors.

During 2010, however the Moon will hamper stargazers wanting to observe this meteor shower. The Astronomical Almanac gives May 6, as the date of the third quarter Moon. The third quarter Moon rises about midnight local standard time, so it will be high in the sky during the peak times to observe the Eta Aquarid meteors.

Across most of the US, the radiant of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower rises about 2:30 in the morning. the earliest twilight will start shortly after 4 AM. Stargazers in the US should look to the southeast in the approximate direction of the constellation Aquarius during this time window.

Debris from comets causes meteor showers. After many orbits, cometary debris fills the comet's orbital path. When Earth crosses the comet's orbital path, stargazers can enjoy a meteor shower. The Eta Aquarid meteor shower is one of the two meteor showers originating from Halley's comet. The other is the Orionid meteor shower in October.

A star gazer wanting to observe the Eta Aquarid meteor shower should get up a couple hours before morning twilight begins, find a dark location, and look to the southeast.

Leonid meteor shower, great date idea for Gen Y'ers - Examiner

If you missed the Perseid meteor shower this summer, don't worry you have another chance to capitalize on a perfect date opportunity. The Leonid meteor shower will light up the sky the morning of Nov. 17.

Peak viewing hours for the shower are expected between 1-1:30 a.m. Pacific time, but will start at 10:00 p.m. Pacific and continue until dawn local time.

The Leonid shower should produce upwards of 500 meteors per hour, according to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The shower is created by debris left behind by the repeat passage through the inner solar system comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, according to Space.com. Because of the position of Mars, the meteors are supposed to look like they are shooting straight at us.

Why should Gen Y'ers care? This is the ideal date. It is unique, it's free and the activity lends itself to talking and getting to know one another.

I wound up going on a first date to watch the Perseid meteor shower this summer and can attest from experience it's a fantastic idea. Pack some munchies and definitely bundle up (so a warm drink is probably a good idea as well) for an evening snuggled up in the dark, under a romantic starry sky with a new (or established) special someone. And, the best part for you Gen Y guys? An activity such as this really lends itself to making a move. It's next to impossible to put your arm around a girl in a creepy way if she's shivering. I'd plan to take advantage if I were you.
